You know that horrible feeling of losing something that will never come back? That's exactly how I felt when I accidentally deleted 10 years' worth of my photos.
Marriage, the birth of children, incredible trips, loved ones lost—it all vanished in the blink of an eye. I cried a lot, I swear! I spent sleepless nights telling myself I would never see those images again.
But then something incredible happened: I GOT ALMOST EVERYTHING BACK!
Yes, you read that right. And if I can do it, you can too. So, if your heart aches because you've lost precious memories, keep reading. It could change everything!
How I lost everything (My stupid mistake)
First, let me tell you. I was organizing my files on the computer, transferring everything to a new external hard drive.
In addition, I thought I was super organized! Except that in the middle of the process, I made the mistake of my life: I formatted the hard drive BEFORE confirming that everything had been copied correctly.
POOF! Ten years' worth of photos had simply vanished. Consequently, I completely panicked. In other words, I had destroyed my own memories. The guilt was overwhelming!
The first glimmer of hope: Google Photos
This is where it gets interesting! A friend asked me casually, "Have you checked Google Photos?" I rolled my eyes because I was sure there was nothing there. However, just to be absolutely certain, I went to photos.google.com.
And then, I almost fell off my chair! There were over 8,000 photos ! At first, I was in shock. Then I started crying, but tears of joy this time! They were photos from 2015 to 2019 that I thought were lost forever.
How did this happen? Simple: years earlier, I had installed the app on my phone and it had enabled automatic backup . I had completely forgotten!
What I recovered:
- Wedding photos (ALL of them!)
- Birth of my first son
- Travel in Europe
- Last photos with my grandfather
Therefore, half a decade came back in 5 minutes! Always check Google Photos, even if you think you have nothing!
WhatsApp and Social Media: Hidden Treasures
Similarly, I discovered that WhatsApp also stores photos! I searched through my old conversations with my wife and family. Hundreds of shared photos were there! Furthermore, I asked my friends to search our chats: I recovered 500 more photos!
Regarding social media (Facebook, Instagram):
- I accessed "Your Photos" on Facebook.
- I downloaded my Instagram data.
- I looked for photos where friends had tagged me. Result: 1,000 more photos recovered! I was already at about 70% of my collection.
Gmail and old phones
We often forget about old emails! In Gmail, I searched using the command has:attachment filename:jpgI found hundreds of photos sent to family or for work.
Then, I uploaded my old phones that were lying around in a drawer. Bingo: 1,000 more photos that had never been uploaded to the cloud back then!
The final recovery: The software investment
After recovering so many things "for free," I decided to invest for the years 2020-2023. I bought Recuva Professional (around €25). It's the best investment I've ever made!
The process :
- I left the analysis running for 14 HOURS !
- The software found more than 4,000 photos.
- 90% were perfect, 10% slightly damaged but salvageable.
I also tested EaseUS , which found 127 photos that the first program hadn't seen. It just goes to show, different programs find different things!
What I've learned (and what you should know)
- A backup is not enough: Today, I have triple protection (Google Photos + External hard drive at home + Second hard drive at my parents' house).
- Automate everything: Never rely on manual backups. Set up automatic backups and check them once a month.
- Never give up: Perseverance eventually pays off. If you have lost photos, KEEP SEARCHING!
Your quick recovery guide:
- Step 1: Check the cloud storage services (Google Photos, iCloud, OneDrive, Dropbox).
- Step 2: Search social media (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp).
- Step 3: Search in Gmail and your old devices/SD cards.
- Step 4: Use professional software (Recuva, EaseUS).
Conclusion: There is hope! I recovered 98% of my photos. Don't despair, your memories may be hidden somewhere, waiting for you to find them.
